What’s the difference between stainless steel pipes and stainless tubes?
The term “pipe” and “tube” are often used to describe the same product, but it is important to know the difference. Though they share the same cylindrical shape, steel pipes are measured by the interior diameter (ID), whereas steel tubes are measured by the outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness. Another difference is that pipes are used to transport fluids and gases, while tubes are used to build parts or structural components.
What types of stainless steel are commonly used for pipes?
304 and 316 grades are most widely used for their corrosion resistance.
What diameter and thickness pipes are available?
Diameters range from 1/8″ to 60″+. Thickness from nominal SCH5S to XXS depending on application requirements.

What are the common end finishes?
Welded, seamless or mechanical joints are available. Standard end finishes include plain end, beveled, threaded.
What pressures can stainless steel pipes withstand?
It depends on the grade, schedule and joint but normally ranges from 150 PSI – 10,000 PSI working pressure ratings.
How is stainless steel pipe joints welded?
SMAW, GTAW, GMAW processes used with matching filler metals like 309/310/316 for butt-welds andSocket welds.
Does it require any post-weld treatment?
Solution annealing may be specified for corrosive services to maximize corrosion resistance of the weld zone.
What industries utilize stainless steel pipes?
Pharma, biotech, food processing, chemical, hydrocarbon processing plants and marine/desalination widely use it.
Does Stainless Steel rust?
Stainless Steel is very corrosion resistant because it is alloyed with Chromium which reacts to oxygen and creates a rust resistant barrier. This is not to say that stainless will never rust, in certain conditions it may still corrode. For example, 304 stainless is the most common stainless alloy, but in marine environments it will eventually rust. 316 stainless alloy was created with more nickel to be more corrosion resistant in those Marine environments. Other stainless alloys are specialized to be more corrosion resistant in a number of different situations, i.e. 310 alloy is corrosion resistant in high heat environments.
Does surface finish play a role in corrosion resistance?
Polished/shot blasted surface keeps better than ground/as-received by providing less surface area for attack.
How to specify stainless steel pipes in drawings?
Specify material grade, schedule/thickness, diameter, ends, joint type, pressure rating and surface finish.
